Our Library Is Growing!

In March 2004, Mr. J. Harwood Cochrane and his family gave the Library a major gift to renovate the existing building and build an addition doubling the size of the branch. A gift from Mr. Cochrane and his family created the Rockville Branch Library in 1985. In recognition of the family's gift, the Hanover Board of Supervisors renamed the branch the Cochrane Rockville Branch Library.
The Cochrane Rockville Branch Library: A New Vision
The addition was designed by Eddie Smith, who designed the original Rockville Branch Library, and his partner Pat McClane. Sale Construction Company was the contractor. During construction, library services continued from a stationary Bookmobile parked in the library parking lot. This library addition, with its expanded meeting room, larger stack area and 10 seat computer lab, is a great boon to the Rockville community. It is also a boon to the Pamunkey Regional Library as a whole, since additional shelf space allows us to house more resources that will be used, through our joint catalog and delivery system, by all in our region.

Cochrane Rockville Branch Library Groundbreaking
In his remarks at the groundbreaking ceremony, Mr. Cochrane said, "I am proud of the new library. The good life starts with a good education and a good education starts with good reading habits and that is where the library comes in. It is hard to believe that a graduate in Hanover County will be competing with someone from India for a job with the telephone company, insurance companies, banks, etc. but this is a fact of life. Why do I like the Library? It offers something for everyone, the young, the old, the black, the white, the rich, and the poor."
The Cochrane Rockville Branch Library groundbreaking took place Wednesday, November 17, 2004.
