Bartleby.com publishes thousands of free online classics of reference, literature and nonfiction.

 

Internet Archive

The Open-Access Text Archive collection is open to the community for the contribution of any type of text, many using Creative Commons licenses. There are many e-book titles available in American Libraries, Project Gutenberg, and several other sub-collections.  Check out the IA project Open Library, too.

 

Google Book Search

Book Search works just like a web search. Search for a title or author or keywords.  Books that are available for download will be marked with a "Full View" link.  There are reference pages for every book so you can quickly find book reviews, web references, maps and more!  Try out our Virginiana or Microfilm Bookshelves to see Google Books in action.

 

Baen Free Library
Baen Books, a well-known publisher of fantasy and sci-fi books, is making available 100+ of its titles in electronic format for free.  You can read these titles online or, if you prefer, you can download the books in one of several formats, with no conditions or strings attached.

 

Barnes & Noble Free e-books

B&N offers around 100 free e-book titles available for download at any one time.  Genres range from romance to sci-fi, horror and more!  Free registration is required.

 

O'Reilly Open Books

O'Reilly, a leading publisher of technical and computer-related books, has made available a number of Open Books--books with various forms of "open" copyright.

 

Rare Book Room

This is an educational site which allows the visitor to examine and read some of the great books of the world's libraries.  These digitized books (about 400 in all) are presented in a medium to medium-high resolution and range over a wide variety of topics and rarity.

Internet Archive Audio Books & Poetry

Listen to free audio books and poetry recordings! This library of audio books and poetry features digital recordings and MP3's from the Naropa Poetics Audio Archive, LibriVox, Project Gutenberg's Audio Book Project, Maria Lectrix, and Internet Archive users.

 

Open Library's Accessible Books
This is part of the Internet Archive's collection of books available to the print-impaired.  Many are available in the DAISY talking-book format or otherwise available in the Open Library.  While most titles are those in the public domain, other are recent works made available through an exception in copyright that allows works to be copied for the purpose of making them accessible.  Works not in the public domain will be made available only to qualified readers officially registered with the Library of Congress's National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped (find out how to register).

Poetry Archive

The premier online collection of poets reading their own work.  Also includes introductory notes on recordings and poets, bibliographies of poetry collections, guided tours around the Archive and themes which lead you on many different paths from poem to poem.

 

LoudLit

This site provides classic literature with accompanying audio narration. Includes novels and poetry that can be read online but requires an mp3 player for downloaded files.

 

Kiddie Records
Kiddie Records Weekly began as a one year project devoted to the golden age of children's records from 1945-1955.  Many of these classic recordings were extravagant Hollywood productions on major record labels and featured big time celebrities and composers.

C-SPAN Video Archive

C-Span has made its entire video archive, including over 8,000 episodes of BookTV, available in a streaming format.  The archives cover every Congressional session, every White House press briefing and other acts of official Washington from 1987 to the present and include over 10,000 hours of programming from its inception in 1979 to 1986.

Internet Archive
Thousands of music files to download or stream, including the following:

  • Live Music Archive - The Internet Archive has teamed up with etree.org to preserve as many live concerts as possible for current and future generations to enjoy in a lossless, downloadable format. All music in this Collection is from trade-friendly artists and is strictly non-commercial, both for access and for any further distribution.

  • Netlabels - This collection hosts catalogs of 'virtual record labels,' non-profit, community-built entities dedicated to providing high quality, non-commercial, freely distributable MP3/OGG-format music for download in many genres.

  • Grateful Dead - In this collection, you'll find downloadable shows (typically, audience recordings), and stream-only shows (typically, soundboard recordings).

WFMU

WFMU-FM is a listener-supported, non-commercial radio station broadcasting at 91.1 Mhz FM in Jersey City, NJ, right across the Hudson from lower Manhattan. It is currently the longest running freeform radio station in the United States.  WFMU makes much of its content available online for free through the following blogs/sites.
