The following Virginia Indian Tribes are recognized by the Commonwealth of Virginia, as of May 2008:

Monacan Indian Nation
Nansemond
Pamunkey
Rappahannock
Upper Mattaponi

These Virginia tribes (except for Pamunkey) are listed on the Bureau of Indian Affairs' List of Petitioners (PDF) as seeking status as tribes recognized by the U.S. government. Others listed as petitioners include the following tribes and/or nations:

Ani-Stohini/Unami Nation
United Cherokee Indian Tribe of Virginia
Wicocomico Indian Nation
Cheroenhaka (Nottoway) Indian Tribe

No Virginia tribes are included in the federal Tribal Entities List (PDF) as of May 2008.
