BRANCH MANAGER III

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

The Branch Manager oversees and is responsible for ensuring high quality library service for library users in all operations of a branch library. The Branch Manager provides direct service to library users and supervises or delegates supervision of all paid employees and volunteers assigned to the branch. The Branch Manager is an integral part of the library’s management team and the position is supervised by a Deputy Director.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE POSITION

  • Manage the day-to-day operations of a branch library
  • Organize and coordinate activities of library staff to ensure exceptional and efficient service to customers
  • Identify community needs and in collaboration with supervisor develop outreach efforts and programming that are of interest to customers
  • Address feedback and complaints from both patrons and staff
  • Instruct and effectively supervise staff including managing scheduling, timecards, leave requests, and performance
  • Interview, hire, and evaluate staff
  • Represent the library in the community
  • Maintain and report statistics and monies
  • Analyze statistics and patterns of facility use to develop and recommend service enhancements and improvements
  • Plan and facilitate branch staff meetings and participate in other meetings
  • Oversee maintenance of the buildings and grounds and equipment
  • Other duties as assigned

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Excellent interpersonal/communication and organizational skills
  • Ability to supervise, instruct, and evaluate employees
  • Ability to work directly with the public in a friendly, helpful manner
  • Ability to handle multiple detailed tasks quickly and accurately
  • Knowledge and skills in working with computers and office/AV equipment
  • Knowledge of library operations

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND TRAINING

  • Master’s degree in library science from an ALA accredited library school required
  • Two years of experience working with customers in a public library required
  • Management/supervisory experience required
  • Eligibility for a Librarian’s Professional Certificate from the Virginia Board for the Certification of Librarians

SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

  • Must work evening and weekend hours on a regular basis and substitute as needed
  • Valid VA driver’s license OR reliable transportation to and from work
  • Subject to a six-month provisional period
  • May require additional training outside the normal work day
