COLLECTION MANAGEMENT LIBRARIAN

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

This position coordinates responsibilities in all area of collection management, including acquisitions, cataloging, and weeding. Recommends materials for purchase, oversees specific procedures for processing and procuring materials, and ensures consistency in application of cataloging principles. Supervises and instructs staff. This position works closely with and is supervised by the Collection Strategy ibrarian.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Gathers community and library data to strategically build relevant, well-balanced and diverse adult, young adult and children's collections and utilizes a variety of sources such as journals, vendors and media.
  • Develops and oversees specific procedures for cataloging, and maintains consistency in application of cataloging principles.
  • Reviews and selects materials that meet the needs of the community.
  • Maintains digital collections and resources.
  • Produces original cataloging and authority work.
  • Uses collection management tools.
  • Coordinates the removal of withdrawn items from the ILS.
  • Compiles reports and statistics to aid in evaluation of the collection.
  • Coaches and supervises collection management staff.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

A Master’s degree in Library and Information Science from an ALA accredited college or university and previous library experience are required. Candidates with the equivalent combination of education, training, and related library experience which demonstrates the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job may be considered.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

  • Must be eligible for state certification by Library of Virginia.
  • Valid VA driver’s license OR reliable transportation to and from work.
  • Subject to six-month provisional period.
