COLLECTION STRATEGY LIBRARIAN

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

This position supervises all aspects of collection development and provides system leadership on collection strategies.  Work involves coordinating the activities of the assigned area of responsibility, supervising subordinate staff, evaluating and implementing procedures in the assigned area of responsibility and preparing various reports.  Employee must exercise independent judgment and initiative in planning and organizing aspects of library services.  This position works with the administrative team and is supervised by the director.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE POSITION:

  • Leads, coaches, supervises, and evaluates collection management staff.
  • Oversees the library's digital collections and resources. Selects materials, compiles monthly statistics, negotiates with vendors, evaluates new products and coordinates with the Reference and Training department as necessary to provide training for staff and public on the library's digital services.
  • Builds effective relationships with branch staff to ensure library collections reflects customer usage and trends.
  • Evaluates community needs and participates in community engagement and outreach efforts to shape a collection that is reflective of the community.
  • Analyzes community and library data to strategically build relevant, well-balanced and diverse adult, young adult and children's collections and utilizes a variety of sources such as journals, vendors and media.
  • Meets goals and objectives to increase the use of library services.
  • Analyzes and tracks collection use and ensures responsive and cost-effective library collections.
  • Oversees all materials selection, ordering, cataloging and processing efforts. Evaluates existing procedures and recommends improvements. May be called upon to assist with all acquisitions processes.
  • Evaluates community needs and participates in community engagement and outreach efforts to shape a collection that is reflective of the community.
  • Plans, develops and implements collections-related projects and initiatives.
  • Creates, manages and oversees the collection strategy budget.
  • Provides advisement, general information, and support to library staff.
  • Keeps up with current trends in the profession and technology. Considers new opportunities to provide innovative service to the community.
  • Attends meetings, conferences, workshops and training sessions and reviews publications to remain current on principles, practices and new developments in collection strategy.
  • Acts as a member of the library administrative team attending all meetings and actively participating in team decisions and discussions.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, TRAINING:

  • Master's degree in Library and Information Science from an accredited school.
  • 3 to 5 years of closely related library experience, to include 2 or more years in a supervisory capacity; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills and abilities for this job. 

SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

  • Must be eligible for state certification by Library of Virginia.
  • Requires a valid driver's license OR reliable transportation to and from work.
  • Subject to six-month provisional period.
