CUSTODIAN

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

The custodian is responsible for ensuring that the branch building and facilities are clean and presentable for use by the public and staff, handling basic building problems, arranging the branch for meetings and special events. This position is supervised by the Branch Manager or the Branch Manager’s designee.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE POSITION

The Custodian is primarily responsible for cleaning the library building.
Duties may include:
  • Vacuuming
  • Sweeping
  • Dusting
  • Mopping
  • Emptying waste cans
  • Restocking rest rooms
  • Cleaning carpets
  • Changing light bulbs
  • Policing the grounds
  • Arranging furniture and equipment for meetings and special events
  • Requesting supplies
  • Other duties as assigned

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of general cleaning and maintenance procedures required.
  • Ability to operate and maintain cleaning equipment such as vacuum cleaners, floor scrubbers, etc.
  • Ability to follow written and oral instructions
  • Ability to work well without supervision
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING

  • Experience in cleaning and maintenance required
  • High school graduate or equivalent preferred

SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

  • Valid VA driver’s license OR reliable transportation to and from work
  • Subject to a six-month probationary period
  • Evening and weekend hours may be required
