LIBRARY ASSISTANT

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

The Library Assistant is responsible for assisting the library user with library services,  the use of the collection and equipment, and for supervising and instructing library staff and volunteers. The Library Assistant performs circulation duties, and assists the Branch Manager in other activities that support library services. This position is supervised by the Branch Manager.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE POSITION

The Library Assistant is primarily responsible for directly assisting the library user and supervising and training library staff.
Duties may include:
  • Assisting patrons with the catalog, equipment and collection
  • Answering reference questions
  • Supervising staff
  • Managing library in the absence of the Branch Manager
  • Instructing library staff
  • Handling phone inquiries and circulation/reference desk transactions
  • Assisting with paperwork and reports
  • Handling money
  • Other duties as assigned

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Ability to work directly with the public in a friendly, helpful manner
  • Excellent interpersonal communication and organizational skills
  • Ability to supervise and instruct employees
  • Ability to handle multiple detailed tasks quickly and accurately
  • Knowledge of computers and computer skills
  • Knowledge of library operations

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, TRAINING

  • High school graduate or equivalent required
  • Library and supervisory experience preferred
  • Two years working directly with the public preferred
  • Two years of college or equivalent preferred

SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

  • Must work evening & weekend hours on a regular basis and substitute as needed
  • Valid VA driver’s license OR reliable transportation to and from work
  • Subject to a six-month probationary period
  • May require additional training outside the normal work day
