PUBLIC SERVICES SPECIALIST

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

The Public Services Specialist is responsible for providing programming for an assigned customer service area, assisting patrons, and performing circulation duties. This position is supervised by the Branch Manager or the Branch Manager’s designee.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE POSITION

  • Develops programs in an assigned area.
  • Presents programming in an assigned area.
  • Conducts outreach to promote library services.
  • Provides information and readers’ advisory service to library users.
  • Promotes physical and digital collections and resources.
  • Instructs and assists users with the public computers and other library technology and equipment.
  • Assists in circulation transactions.
  • Handles money.
  • Maintains statistics.
  • Attends required meetings, workshops and training.
  • Assists with directing the work of others as needed to help manage workload and operational needs.
  • Assists with training employees and volunteers.
  • Other duties as assigned.

  • Excellent interpersonal communication and organizational skills.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • High school graduate or equivalent required; college degree or coursework preferred.
  • Relevant previous experience required.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

  • Must work evening and weekend hours on a regular basis and substitute as needed.
  • Valid Virginia driver’s license OR reliable transportation to and from work.
  • Subject to six-month provisional period.
  • May require additional training outside the normal work day.
