PUBLIC SERVICES LIBRARIAN

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

The Public Services Librarian provides service to library users in an assigned customer service area. This position supervises or delegates supervision of all employees and volunteers assigned to the area. The Librarian is an integral part of the branch library management team and the position is supervised by the Branch Manager.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE POSITION

  • Manages the day-to-day operations of an assigned area.
  • Identifies community needs and in collaboration with supervisor develops outreach efforts and programming that are of interest to customers.
  • Addresses feedback and complaints from both patrons and staff.
  • Instructs and effectively supervises staff including managing scheduling, timecards, leave requests, and performance.
  • Represents the library in the community.
  • Functions as person in charge in the absence of the Branch Manager.
  • Develops programs in an assigned area.
  • Presents programming in an assigned area.
  • Conducts outreach to promote library services.
  • Provides information and readers’ advisory service to library users.
  • Promotes physical and digital collections and resources.
  • Instructs and assists users with the public computers and other library technology and equipment.
  • Assists in circulation transactions.
  • Handles money.
  • Maintains statistics.
  • Attends required meetings, workshops and training.
  • Assists with training employees and volunteers.
  • Other duties as assigned.

  • Excellent interpersonal communication and organizational skills.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Master's degree in Library and Information Science from an ALA accredited library school.
  • Relevant previous experience preferred.
  • Librarian certificate from the Virginia Board for the Certification of Librarians within 6 months of hire.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

  • Must work evening and weekend hours on a regular basis and substitute as needed.
  • Valid Virginia driver’s license OR reliable transportation to and from work.
  • Subject to six-month provisional period.
