Hanover Confederate Monument Digital Collection

On Thursday, August 27, 1914, local dignitaries, women's groups and citizens gathered on the Courthouse Green at Hanover to dedicate the Hanover County Confederate Monument. The names of known soldiers from Hanover County who served during the Civil War had been inscribed on bronze plaques on each side of the obelisk. Col. Robert E. Lee Jr. delivered the dedication address for the new monument.

The Hanover County Confederate Monument collection presents images from the document collection of the Pamunkey Regional Library, relating to the planning and construction of the monument. The images consist of correspondence, sketches, blueprints, notes, and other ephemera.

On Saturday, August 23, 2014 at 2:00 p.m., the Hanover County Sesquicentennial Committee held a re-dedication for the Hanover County Confederate Monument on the Courthouse Green.  Please see the Hanover County Historical Society's website for more information.

Many thanks to the Library of Virginia, whose staff scanned the documents into image files. The images will also be added to the Library of Virginia's Legacy Project.
