End of Services After June 30, 2024

Pamunkey Regional Library (PRL) services to King & Queen County residents will end on June 30, 2024.

You can access the following through June 30, 2024:
  • Physical materials
  • Computer use, printing, faxing and photocopying
  • ebooks and other digital resources

King & Queen County is providing library service at 396 Newtown Rd., St. Stephens Church, VA 23148.

Pamunkey Regional Library (PRL) Services to King & Queen County Residents after June 30, 2024


Question: Why is service changing for King & Queen residents?
Answer: King and Queen County decided to end the County’s relationship with the Pamunkey Regional Library (PRL). PRL will no longer be providing service to county residents after June 30, 2024. The County will provide library services to county residents.

Question: I am a King and Queen resident. Where do I go for library service? Who do I contact about library service?
Answer: Contact the King and Queen County Library being operated by King and Queen County. It is in the former PRL branch located at 396 Newtown Road, St. Stephen’s Church, VA 23148. Question: Why can’t King and Queen residents continue to use PRL branches after June 30, 2024?
Answer: One of the great values of the regional library is access to the regional library’s services throughout the region. Approximately two thirds of the library service delivered to King and County residents was delivered from branches outside of King and Queen County. The regional library board did not feel it was fair to their residents to continue to provide the majority of library service to King and Queen at no cost.

Question: Will King and Queen residents have the option of paying an annual fee to have a PRL library card after June 30, 2024?
Answer: No, King and Queen residents will not have the option of paying an annual fee to have a PRL library card after June 30, 2024.

Question: Will King and Queen residents who work, own property or attend school in one of the other counties served by PRL have the option of paying an annual fee to have a PRL library card after June 30, 2024?
Answer: No, King and Queen residents, even those who work, own property or attend school in one of the other counties served by PRL, will not have the option of paying an annual fee to have a PRL library card after June 30, 2024.

Question: Will King and Queen residents over the age of 65 be able to get a PRL library card?
Answer: No, King and Queen residents over the age of 65 will not be able to get a PRL library card.

Question: I am a King and Queen resident who owns property and pays taxes in one of the other counties served by Pamunkey Regional. Why am I not eligible for a PRL library card?
Answer: The Counties that are served by PRL pay into the system based on the number of residents in their county. Those who work, go to school or own property in county but do not reside in the county are not considered residents.

Question: Will King & Queen County residents be able to obtain a PRL library card in the future?
Answer: The PRL Library Board of Trustees will re-evaluate the reciprocal agreement with King & Queen County after December 31, 2025.

Question: Can I still visit and/or attend storytime at a PRL branch if I am a King and Queen County resident?
Answer: Yes, any service or resource that does not require a PRL library card is still accessible to King and Queen County residents.
