CHILDREN’S PROGRAMMER

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

The Children’s Programmer is responsible for developing, preparing and conducting programs for children both in Branch Libraries and at other sites.  This position is supervised by the Branch Manager or the Branch Manager’s designee.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE POSITION

The Children’s Programmer is primarily responsible for preparing and conducting programs for groups of children and for planning the Summer Reading Program and other events for children.
Duties may include:
  • Developing programs for children
  • Presenting age appropriate story times
  • Planning and presenting Summer Reading Programs and other events for children
  • Conducting visits to children in schools to promote library services
  • Representing the library at community events for children
  • Maintaining statistics
  • Attending required meetings, workshops and training
  • Other duties as assigned

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Ability to prepare and present creative programs based on children’s literature to groups of children
  • Ability to work directly with the public, especially children, in a friendly, helpful manner
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, TRAINING

  • Experience in making presentations to groups of children required
  • High school graduate or equivalent required, two years College or equivalent preferred
  • Two years working directly with children preferred

SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

  • Must work evening and weekend hours on a regular basis and substitute as needed
  • Valid VA driver’s license or reliable transportation to and from work
  • Subject to a six-month probationary period
  • May require additional training outside the normal work day
