LIBRARIAN
GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The Librarian provides assistance to the public, instruction and training for library users and staff and works to promote knowledge and use of library resources. This position reports to a Supervising Librarian.ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE POSITION
- Assist library users of all ages by providing excellent customer service
- Develop and deliver system-wide public and staff training
- Integrate digital literacy skills into public programs and library staff training
- Adopt new technologies and provide instruction to library customers and staff
- Guide customers in the use of physical and digital collections
- Coordinate staff in the promotion of library resources
- Provide information and readers’ advisory service to library users
- Contribute content for online publication and social media
- Promote library resources through community outreach
- Participate in gathering and reporting library statistical information
- Other duties as assigned

- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships
- Knowledge of internet search tools, online reference sources, and Microsoft Windows and Office applications
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, TRAINING
- Master’s degree in library science from an ALA accredited library school required
- Eligible for certification by the Virginia Board for the Certification of Librarians required
- Experience developing and teaching workshops preferred
- Library experience preferred
SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
- Must work evening and weekend hours on a regular basis and substitute as needed
- Valid VA driver’s license OR reliable transportation to and from work
- Subject to six-month probationary period
- May require additional training outside normal work day
