SUPERVISING LIBRARIAN
GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The Supervising Librarian serves as part of the management team, supervises several units of the library (one of which is a public service branch), and selects materials for the library collection. This position is supervised by the Library Director.ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE POSITION
The Supervising Librarian is responsible for the operation of assigned units, supervising and evaluating the Managers of assigned units, participating in the management of the library system, selecting materials in assigned areas, planning and coordinating instruction in assigned areas, and special assignments and projects.Duties may include:

Visiting assigned units regularly
Assisting managers with implementation of procedures and policies
Coordinating the work of the library
Developing new procedures and policies
Reading review journals to select materials
Interviewing, hiring, instructing and evaluating managers
Instructing staff
Handling complaints, problems, concerns
Participating in professional organizations
Other duties as assigned

Extensive knowledge of professional library service
Excellent interpersonal communication and organizational skills
Ability to manage, supervise, instruct and evaluate individuals
Knowledge of computers and other electronic equipment
Ability to work in collaboration with a management team
Ability to work directly with the public in a friendly, helpful manner
Ability to handle multiple tasks
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, TRAINING

M.L.S. from an ALA accredited library school required
Eligible for certification by Virginia Board for the Certification of Librarians required
Two years professional library experience required
Experience in library management and supervision preferred
Public library experience preferred
Experience teaching/conducting workshops preferred
SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

May require evening or weekend hours
Valid VA driver’s license
Subject to six-month probationary period
May require additional training outside the normal work day
