Branch History

The Rockville Branch Library is located in the small community of Rockville, Virginia, approximately twenty miles from the far west end of Richmond. This rural area is fast becoming a suburb of Richmond, as many city dwellers look for a slower paced life in this beautiful, rolling countryside. The Rockville Branch Library helps to foster the vital community spirit that is present.

Rockville was served for a number of years by the Pamunkey Regional Library's Bookmobile until the Rockville Woman's Club, with help of the Rockville Ruritan Club and other volunteers of the community, purchased supplies, equipment, furniture and books, plus an old farm house to be converted into the library. Hanover County and Pamunkey Regional Library assumed financial responsibility and took charge on July 1, 1978. In 1985, the library moved with a staff of four to a new, colonial style building donated by Mr. and Mrs. J. Harwood Cochrane.

In the years since its opening, the Rockville Branch Library staff has grown, the collection contains over 11,000 volumes, and staff offer multiple programs each week in addition to and a summer reading program. Today the Branch is still the hub of the Rockville community. It was conceived, built and continues to be patronized by individuals and families who understand the importance of service and learning.
